Methodist History in Marlboro |
Persecution |
The early days of Methodism met with considerable
persecution. This was due in part to the early teaching of John and Charles
Wesley who, because of their loyalty to King George III, were consequently
not very popular with the Revolutionaries of the time. Many of the early
missionaries in the colonies and the early circuit riders were also loyal to
the kind. Any clergy who officiated at a service and did not pray for the
King and the Royal family went against his duty and oath, as well as against
his conscience. When bishop Charles Inglis of the Church of England was
ordered to omit the prayer for the King because General Washington would be
attending the service, he refused to do so. Conditions steadily
deteriorated for the clergy, even those who confined themselves to the
doctrines of the Gospel without touching politics. By October of 1776, some
were cast in jail, some fled to save their lives and some had their houses
plundered. After the Declaration of Independence was signed, John & Charles
Wesley were forced to make many changes in format to become more compatible
with the needs and desires of the new United States of America. |
New Organ |
A new electronic organ was installed in 1962 while Dr. Donald C.
DeHart was organist and choir director. He paid for all the monthly installments
himself after the church had made the down payment from an existing organ fund.
The old pipe organ still remains in the Church (installed in 1895) and is now
covered by the new chancel and altar. However, the original organ pipers are
still visible in the background. |
